Hua Tunan 画图男  (Chen Yingjie)

Chen Yingjie (aka Hua Tunan) was born in 1991, Foshan, China (a small town not far from the capital of Hong Kong). He is a contemporary artist, using various methods to combine eastern and western art. His aim is to incorporate power into nature.

He was taught how to write and paint by his father from the age of four in which his father would hold Chen’s hand and guide the brush in order to help him learn the different techniques and various ways to work. When Chen was —,  he went to Singapore to study, this is where he was introduced to street art and graffiti. Yingjie was inspired by the contrasting colours and the beauty of the expressive work, and a year later, returned to Foshan in order to open an independent art studio.

Whilst in his studio he explored ways in which to combine traditional Chinese art and western graffiti to create his own personal and unique approach to art. Yingjie decided to use splashes of ink, acrylic and spray-paint to blend his paintings into their surroundings and to display movement and energy in his work. He then began to work into each piece, creating either an animal or a human portrait.

His work relies on chance, for each paint splatter is laid down in an expressive manner to the rhythm of a drum. Chen often uses cups, heavily-saturated paint brushes and his hands to apply the chosen medium to his work (usually acrylic for his larger murals and then ink for smaller and more precise paintings). The use of kinetic energy in his work clearly shows movement and dynamics in each piece that he creates, it creates powerful approach to making artwork and the energy is displayed well through the expressive marks created.
